Posti becomes MyData development pioneer

MyData, i.e. personal data collected by different actors and applications, is still fragmentary and largely untapped – although its potential both for businesses and for an individual's own benefit is evident. Thus, the Finnish State Development Company Vake Oy and the Federation of Finnish Technology Industries held a competition to seek an operator that could collect the personal data of Finnish citizens to develop improved data-based services.

From forty entrants, eight teams were selected for the final round, held on 18 and 19 June. The plan presented by Posti was chosen as the winner, meaning the OmaPosti application will become a personal user interface for all Finns and known as MyData.

“Posti wants to be actively involved in contributing to the creation of the Finnish OmaData ecosystem. This is a natural continuation of our responsible data services, which also fits perfectly with our vision and strategy. We believe that we will secure new value for business, consumers and society by operating in the data economy on the principle of personal data,” Mikko Ristimäki, Posti’s Head of Data & AI Services, emphasised after winning the award.

“In the Omadata challenge, a solution was sought that would speed up the development of the ecosystem and the emergence of services that affect it. This is also clearly emphasized in Rinne's new government programme: citizens need to have better control of their personal data, and new business should be created around it. Posti’s solution will enable the rapid development of OmaData services and wide-ranging user groups. Hopefully, the OmaPosti application will work as soon as possible as an OmaData account that is common to all Finns,” says Tuomas Teuri, Chief Business Development Officer, Vake.

“Posti was the dark horse of the challenge competition, surprising the jury with its proposal since Posti had not been previously active in MyData development. For Finnish people Posti is an institution that can provide critically important trust regarding the sharing and licensing of information between different services,” says Ville Peltola, Director of Digitalisation at Technology Industries of Finland.

The winner will continue working on the trial solution into a pilot project phase. The goal is to build the first version of the OmaData solution for testing and further development with users and stakeholders. In addition to Posti's solution, the challenge featured other laudable teams, such as Tilaajavastuu Oy's Muntiedot.fi service, MyHealthData group and Head.ai, which will continue to work together with Posti’s team to accelerate ecosystem development around OmaData. The results of the pilot phase and Posti's solution will be presented at the MyData 2019 conference in Helsinki, 25–27 September.
